Norman HAWKER (Jim CLAYTON)

Jim Clayton was born Norman Douglas Hawker on 15/12/1900 at East Oxford, Christchurch and died at Porirua on 17/7/1977. Little is known of his life as a young man, but perhaps like some of his brothers he fled from home when a youth to escape a tyrant father. It was widely accepted as fact in the Hawker family that he had been killed in the Murchison earthquake. However, he and his youngest brother Ronald Gordon Hawker (who was sworn to secrecy) had kept in occasional touch and contact was able to be made with his Clayton descendants, including his daughter Frances Hodgson who was astounded and deeply hurt to learn after his death of his true name and family. We now know that he worked at varied seasonal jobs for a time in Australia, and was a prominent jockey in the lower North Island and rode many horses for the Dunstan family. It is not known when he changed his name from Hawker to Clayton. Details of descendants of his son Ronald were supplied by his grand-daughter Helen Frances Lenihan. I would welcome more names for this family tree. E-mail me at freshflowers@xtra.co.nz. BACK
